Hopes Exceeded

Frank James, a retired anesthesiologist and long-term resident of Winston-Salem, has a deep connection and involvement with the community.

Frank came to Augsburg Lutheran Church ten years ago, searching for a new beginning.  His long-time faith community suffered an internal and disruptive conflict that hurt Frank and his wife leading to their departure from that church.  Frank was aware that his coworker Art, after having dealt with a difficult situation, found support and care at Augsburg. Because of Frank’s respect for him, he decided to visit.

As he arrived at worship for the first week, another coworker Liz recognized him and warmly introduced him to the pastor.  He was also welcomed by strangers.  Pastor Rinn counseled him before joining and advised Frank to list five personal religious goals or church requirements.  His advice, “if a church meets at least three of those goals, join.”

Frank’s first goal was to find a place he felt free to doubt, question, learn, and continue to grow on his faith journey. Meaningful sermons, a place to focus on his faith and beliefs without being distracted by conflict, and a strong music program were all important to Frank.

“At Augsburg,” Frank shared, “I found all my hopes were met and exceeded.” After leaving a divisive environment, Frank found redemption and witnessed Augsburg’s thoughtful, prayerful, and thorough response to seeking resolutions.

Today, Frank feels that Augsburg is a welcoming, nurturing place. “There is a strong sense of family,” he shared. Frank contributes to the life of the church by leading the Evangelism Team and strives to welcome all, as he was welcomed.
