Augsburg starts construction of outdoor gathering space

Augsburg Lutheran Church, in partnership with F.L. Blum Construction Company, is constructing a new Outdoor Gathering Space on the far west side of the campus on West Fifth Street. This attractive garden space will include a plaza presentation area, benched seating for more than eighty people, and plenty of additional space for seating on the lawn.

This space will support Augsburg’s ministries for worship, faith formation, youth and children’s ministries, special events, community gatherings, and fellowship opportunities. In addition, this space will provide an option for worship while indoor worship is limited due to Covid-19 protocols.

The Outdoor Gathering Space project serves as a first phase to a Campus Wide Renewal Effort that is currently in the planning and programming stages. The project in its entirety will address infrastructure issues and create spaces for a variety of ministries including Augsburg’s focus on community outreach.

The Outdoor Gathering Space project will begin with the demolition of the building at 853 West Fifth Street. In accordance with the approved guidelines of the Historical Resources Commission, Augsburg has worked to preserve architectural elements of the building for other historical projects.

Demolition is expected to begin on March 8th and the project should take approximately nine weeks for completion. Future updates will be provided as the project continues.
